“We learned that before making food or new recipes, we need to wash our hands so we don’t transfer bacteria. We also learned how to wash the dishes.”

A Pathways student
Nutritionist Teaching

Program Activity Snapshot:

To create a youth-led approach to teaching students food and nutrition skills:

  • We created a ten-week mentorship program for a dozen Pathways students
  • Youth collaborated with a chef and nutritionist to develop learning modules for a series of workshops on healthy eating and lifestyles

Objectives:

  1. Establish a youth committee to inform and lead food and nutrition education workshops
  2. Raise awareness of healthy lifestyle habits
  3. Provide youth with greater access to healthy food
  4. Build a sense of community among students

What was the result?

  • Formed a collaboration with the YMCA youth group to participate in activities
  • Developed partnerships with local grocery stores to provide healthy snacks
  • Developed a facilitators handbook to replicate the project in the future and potentially other Pathways communities
